Last year in Mongolia, Pastor Andy sat with families as their children received Winter Kits packs: boots, coats, and a hand-knitted beanie. Honestly, the beanies were a particularly special blessing. One lady from Eastgate knitted over 40; several knitted one. But every beanie lands on the head of a grateful child.
Mongolian winters are brutally cold. These aren’t decorative extras. Children wear them every day throughout the long, freezing months, and families receive them as tangible expressions of love, care, dignity, and hope. These packs of gloves, coats and boots, accompanied by our knitted beanies, provide a way for churches in Mongolia to be beacons of light.
So here’s a challenge for the knitters of Eastgate: How many beanies could we produce between now and October to send with Nicole? And if you’re not a knitter, perhaps this is your moment to learn.
Unfortunately, we can’t accept purchased beanies because they simply aren’t made for the realities of Mongolian winter conditions. The approved patterns are specifically designed to genuinely protect and bless the children who receive them.
So perhaps gather a few friends. Knit together. Pray as you knit. Create something warm, practical, and deeply personal that will sit on the head of a child living through a -50°C winter. These small acts of love, offered faithfully, literally travel a very long way.
